9/11: From the Ashes – "Hope"
Twenty-five years after losing his older brother in the South Tower on September 11th, Craig Woodall — a retired 30-year high school educator and principal from Fort Collins, Colorado — joins Dick Foth to talk about the long road from grief to hope. Craig walks through the last phone call he ever had with his brother, the agonizing wait for news, and the seven months he spent "running from the storm" before a single, unmistakable moment turned him around. Using the image of a buffalo that faces into a storm instead of fleeing it, and anchoring everything in Romans 5:3-4, Craig unpacks how suffering can produce perseverance, character, and ultimately hope — and how one small word, "yet," can change the trajectory of a life. It’s a conversation about loss, faith, family, and the quiet, daily choice to let hardship develop you instead of define or defeat you.

1
00:00:06.165 --> 00:00:10.506
Well, my friend today is Craig Woodall from Fort Collins, Colorado.
2
00:00:10.706 --> 00:00:11.847
Craig, how on earth are you?
3
00:00:12.147 --> 00:00:12.807
I'm doing great.
4
00:00:13.007 --> 00:00:13.707
Thanks for having me.
5
00:00:14.567 --> 00:00:17.968
Well, I heard you speak this past week.
6
00:00:18.268 --> 00:00:27.931
And the reason I asked you to do this is that your subject and your focus was so pertinent to this moment that I just wanted to talk with you.
7
00:00:27.951 --> 00:00:30.932
And you were kind enough on the spur of the moment to agree to do this.
8
00:00:31.592 --> 00:00:35.035
Give us just a little snapshot of who you are, wherever you were born and brought up.
9
00:00:35.055 --> 00:00:38.337
Just give us a little of that so folks can know you a little bit.
10
00:00:38.818 --> 00:00:45.243
So I'm a 30-year retired public educator, all of it at the high school level, social studies.
11
00:00:45.283 --> 00:00:48.866
Last 12 years as a principal, I'm a proud father of four.
12
00:00:49.586 --> 00:00:56.177
Amazing kids, two that are out of college, one in college, one still in high school, happily married, lived in Fort Collins, Colorado.
13
00:00:56.758 --> 00:01:02.547
Yeah, grew up mainly in San Diego and moved to Colorado in 1998 to a degree.
14
00:01:05.090 --> 00:01:06.551
I have pretty much stayed ever since.
15
00:01:07.051 --> 00:01:08.812
And you're the youngest of three boys.
16
00:01:09.072 --> 00:01:10.693
I have an older brother, older sister.
17
00:01:10.933 --> 00:01:12.133
I was the youngest of three kids.
18
00:01:12.453 --> 00:01:13.574
Youngest of three kids.
19
00:01:14.074 --> 00:01:19.717
When you were talking the other day, you just started referencing your brother.
20
00:01:20.997 --> 00:01:25.342
But in your talk, you stood up and essentially this is what I heard.
21
00:01:25.382 --> 00:01:26.843
This may not have been what you said.
22
00:01:27.904 --> 00:01:32.329
This is what I heard that I'm here to talk to you today about hope.
23
00:01:32.889 --> 00:01:38.335
And then you you gave us an illustration of an animal to sort of get us going.
24
00:01:38.935 --> 00:01:39.616
Tell us about that.
25
00:01:39.916 --> 00:01:46.041
So they say that Buffalo is one of the only animals that turn and chase and charge into a storm.
26
00:01:46.061 --> 00:01:49.123
And they often will do it by joining together with their herd.
27
00:01:49.143 --> 00:01:54.287
Cause I know that's so much stronger where most animals, most people just turn and run from a storm.
28
00:01:54.968 --> 00:01:57.870
When you run from a storm, that storm really has no end.
29
00:01:58.130 --> 00:01:59.311
It just keeps chasing you.
30
00:01:59.371 --> 00:02:00.212
It keeps falling.
31
00:02:00.412 --> 00:02:07.938
And so the Buffalo, even though it's harder by turning and walking directly or charging into that storm, they're going to get through it much quicker and,
32
00:02:08.496 --> 00:02:13.223
You know, when I was dealing with lofts and things, I was anything but Buffalo.
33
00:02:13.243 --> 00:02:17.729
I was trying to run and hide, needed to truly face the storm.
34
00:02:17.769 --> 00:02:21.855
And it's become a theme in my life with adversity that has come.
35
00:02:21.895 --> 00:02:23.377
I've tried to learn to face the storm.
36
00:02:29.173 --> 00:02:45.140
25 years ago this month, you ran into a storm and it started for you, I guess, when you walked into the house that day and you wanted to play with, you'd been teaching or whatever, wanted to play with your little girl and your wife said to you what?
37
00:02:45.780 --> 00:02:47.121
She just said, hey, call your brother.
38
00:02:48.381 --> 00:02:52.443
And I said, no, because I'd been teaching and coaching all day.
39
00:02:55.985 --> 00:02:58.508
And my brother and I just weren't great phone talkers.
40
00:02:58.548 --> 00:03:00.610
We never were better emailers.
41
00:03:01.211 --> 00:03:04.334
If we were gonna talk on the phone, I'm gonna go, let's be quick.
42
00:03:04.414 --> 00:03:16.286
And when she told me he called earlier that day that I should call him back, then I got something wrong with his marriage or with my parents, with the market or something.
43
00:03:16.366 --> 00:03:18.629
So yeah, I just, luckily,
44
00:03:19.391 --> 00:03:21.093
took my wife's advice and called him back.
45
00:03:21.554 --> 00:03:26.540
So the beautiful part of it is, is he and his wife were calling to tell me they were pregnant with their first child.
46
00:03:27.552 --> 00:03:39.554
And so our conversation was so beautiful, but it was very interesting because even though I'm the younger brother, I bought a house first, I had a child first, I was married first.
47
00:03:39.574 --> 00:03:43.455
So all of his questions were what you normally ask the older brother.
48
00:03:43.535 --> 00:03:48.076
And so our roles had kind of shifted where he, you know, what is it like to get up every night?
49
00:03:48.116 --> 00:03:48.996
How could you pick a name?
50
00:03:49.156 --> 00:03:50.917
How are mom and dad as grandparents?
51
00:03:51.037 --> 00:03:52.197
All these kinds of questions.
52
00:03:52.997 --> 00:03:55.018
we talked about what we wanted to be with our kids.
53
00:03:55.038 --> 00:03:56.539
So we want to coach them in little league.
54
00:03:56.559 --> 00:03:57.560
Were they going to be athletes?
55
00:03:57.600 --> 00:03:58.821
Are they going to be musicians?
56
00:03:58.861 --> 00:04:04.564
And just an unreal conversation that we didn't have very often.
57
00:04:04.904 --> 00:04:05.525
I'll be honest.
58
00:04:05.545 --> 00:04:07.186
We didn't talk like that very much.
59
00:04:07.826 --> 00:04:10.728
We would sometimes in person, but not just over the phone.
60
00:04:10.748 --> 00:04:13.649
We're both busy and driven in our careers.
61
00:04:13.729 --> 00:04:16.431
And it was a beautiful conversation.
62
00:04:17.177 --> 00:04:17.917
And then what?
63
00:04:18.418 --> 00:04:24.540
So the maybe most beautiful piece of that is that would be the last time I ever spoke to my brother.
64
00:04:25.401 --> 00:04:28.582
And that was September 6, 2001.
65
00:04:28.662 --> 00:04:32.704
And the following Tuesday, of course, was September 11, 2001.
66
00:04:35.649 --> 00:04:37.611
Like everyone, I know exactly where I was.
67
00:04:37.692 --> 00:04:43.498
I was sitting in a classroom getting ready for the day, saw on the TV what was going on.
68
00:04:43.999 --> 00:04:50.286
My brother worked on the 89th floor of the South Tower for a company called KBW Deep Redwoods.
69
00:04:51.528 --> 00:04:53.330
And when that first tower was hit,
70
00:04:54.480 --> 00:04:58.523
He called out and told my dad, you know, Hey, that's the other power.
71
00:04:58.643 --> 00:04:59.244
Don't worry.
72
00:04:59.264 --> 00:05:08.631
He literally talked about seeing people jump or fall from the buildings, the amazing things he was seeing, but Hey, it's not my building.
73
00:05:08.671 --> 00:05:09.472
So don't worry.
74
00:05:10.473 --> 00:05:13.195
And then of course, 17 minutes later, a second plane hit.
75
00:05:13.255 --> 00:05:21.181
And even just from the being an American and a, and a social studies teacher, just that moment of this is an attack.
76
00:05:21.441 --> 00:05:22.002
This is not.
77
00:05:23.225 --> 00:05:24.565
accident was overwhelming.
78
00:05:24.665 --> 00:05:34.628
Then knowing that my brother was in that power was very overwhelming, but he was a large driven athletic dude.
79
00:05:34.728 --> 00:05:37.288
I was, I have no way he's not getting out.
80
00:05:37.328 --> 00:05:42.329
I assumed of all people he'd be carrying people out, running back in, carrying people out, running back in.
81
00:05:43.189 --> 00:05:45.390
He did call out again, so we knew he
82
00:05:46.325 --> 00:05:47.947
He was fine at impact.
83
00:05:48.067 --> 00:05:51.532
He left a message for my parents just saying, that was my tower.
84
00:05:51.552 --> 00:05:53.214
I don't know what happened.
85
00:05:53.875 --> 00:05:56.639
There's chaos in here and I got to do all I can to get out.
86
00:05:56.719 --> 00:06:03.388
So, yeah, I spent that morning the same way like most people did, watching it play out on TV, just knowing my brother was at the center of it.
87
00:06:12.532 --> 00:06:15.155
you had somebody in that building and the building collapsed.
88
00:06:15.935 --> 00:06:17.777
And there were, what was the number?
89
00:06:17.797 --> 00:06:20.540
2,977 folks.
90
00:06:20.580 --> 00:06:21.421
Was that the right number?
91
00:06:21.441 --> 00:06:22.882
2,977.
92
00:06:23.242 --> 00:06:25.705
That passed away.
93
00:06:25.725 --> 00:06:30.269
In your description of that and your response to it,
94
00:06:31.690 --> 00:06:35.531
You said several things when I heard you speak, and I can't put them in order.
95
00:06:35.891 --> 00:06:41.973
I did take notes, but I'd prefer that you put them in order, if you would.
96
00:06:42.413 --> 00:06:51.115
Just so our listeners can get a track, what does it mean to be a buffalo and face into the storm, if you will, that was this.
97
00:06:51.975 --> 00:06:57.876
It's a historic storm, but it's a personal, emotional, devastating, spiritual, psychological.
98
00:06:57.916 --> 00:07:00.997
Give us a little track, if you don't mind, to just think about it.
99
00:07:01.037 --> 00:07:01.137
Sure.
100
00:07:01.197 --> 00:07:06.300
So the unique thing about 9-11, I had experienced other loss in my life, but they were immediate.
101
00:07:06.840 --> 00:07:10.562
You know, there was a car wreck, I got a phone call and they were gone.
102
00:07:10.602 --> 00:07:11.823
There was no wondering.
103
00:07:12.583 --> 00:07:13.624
This you wonder.
104
00:07:14.204 --> 00:07:18.226
You wonder not just for the first hour, but for the first week.
105
00:07:19.187 --> 00:07:23.509
Because after he called out after the second impact, we never heard from him.
106
00:07:24.070 --> 00:07:25.651
But that didn't mean he was gone.
107
00:07:26.531 --> 00:07:28.172
In fact, I had called him,
108
00:07:29.005 --> 00:07:52.541
times that morning and it just rang but then the last time it was just silence and it turns out that the building had just collapsed so it's like there's no way that we're going to get communication even if he's completely fine for a long time and so i i stood in front of the tv trying to find him just searching for him looking around trying to find him for the better part of a few days and when
109
00:07:53.450 --> 00:07:55.090
I didn't for the first two days.
110
00:07:55.191 --> 00:07:56.731
I pretty much knew he was gone.
111
00:07:56.751 --> 00:08:01.972
You know, there's a part of your brain that could text you and says, maybe he's had his amnesia in a hospital.
112
00:08:03.153 --> 00:08:11.315
Uh, but I pretty much knew he was gone and the analogy of the Buffalo, I just say I ran from the door for months.
113
00:08:11.555 --> 00:08:12.855
I just didn't want to think about it.
114
00:08:12.995 --> 00:08:14.076
I couldn't think about it.
115
00:08:14.096 --> 00:08:15.436
Cause when I did, uh, yeah,
116
00:08:16.147 --> 00:08:16.487
numb.
117
00:08:16.567 --> 00:08:17.348
I would get angry.
118
00:08:18.188 --> 00:08:22.171
I would not be a good dad, a good husband, a good teacher.
119
00:08:22.291 --> 00:08:23.832
I still had a job to do.
120
00:08:23.952 --> 00:08:33.798
So I, you know, put the teacher hat on and, and it was literally seven months later in April of 2002, which is an interesting timeline.
121
00:08:33.818 --> 00:08:41.844
And I didn't share this in the service, but that's also the same time they identified him for the first time was in April of 2002.
122
00:08:42.164 --> 00:08:44.065
So we really went seven months to
123
00:08:44.899 --> 00:08:45.461
unclear.
124
00:08:46.122 --> 00:08:52.636
And I had this Holy Spirit moment that brought my world that just said, enough, take your head up.
125
00:08:53.397 --> 00:08:54.400
You are not defeated.
126
00:08:56.355 --> 00:09:02.099
in a moment realized I've got to do something or else I'm just going to spot a lot of control.
127
00:09:02.259 --> 00:09:12.046
So by a Holy Spirit moment, you know, the Spirit is spoken of in Scripture in various ways, one of which is Counselor, the one who comes alongside sort of that old.
128
00:09:12.486 --> 00:09:15.969
And the Holy Spirit in that moment essentially said, do you stop it?
129
00:09:17.425 --> 00:09:20.906
turn around, stand up, whatever the language is.
130
00:09:20.946 --> 00:09:21.446
Is that right?
131
00:09:21.607 --> 00:09:23.227
I mean, it's just boom like that.
132
00:09:24.448 --> 00:09:41.594
I mean, there's, it's only happened to me four times in my life that I can think of probably half a thousand and I ignored it or just thought it was smart, but for a clear time, this was one of them because I literally was fed down, shuffling my free feet across a cold parking lot.
133
00:09:42.314 --> 00:09:44.995
As clear as day, it popped in my head and now,
134
00:09:45.805 --> 00:10:12.263
pick your head up you are not defeated to the point i looked around like did anyone hear that yeah and it was it was extremely clear and i and i will tell you i did i immediately picked my head up and i say very clearly i was not healed in the moment i was not done grieving i i didn't even started grieving yet but i knew like enough you've got to face this storm if you want to ever be anything for your daughter for your wife for your students for your athletes
135
00:10:12.883 --> 00:10:14.663
You've got to face this storm at some point.
136
00:10:15.044 --> 00:10:18.284
Here is this new baby, your niece.
137
00:10:20.005 --> 00:10:22.025
And now here we are 25 years later.
138
00:10:22.525 --> 00:10:23.285
And where is she?
139
00:10:23.826 --> 00:10:27.166
So she is living in Ireland, of all places.
140
00:10:27.226 --> 00:10:28.827
At least that's where she went to school.
141
00:10:28.887 --> 00:10:31.127
She's completed two masters.
142
00:10:31.187 --> 00:10:34.368
She graduated from Columbia University, played volleyball there.
143
00:10:34.408 --> 00:10:39.349
And the last guy connected with her said she was getting ready to start work on a doctorate.
144
00:10:40.054 --> 00:10:42.616
Just an amazing thing.
145
00:10:43.237 --> 00:10:45.639
It's really incredible.
146
00:10:46.480 --> 00:10:47.801
Obviously, she never met her dad.
147
00:10:48.081 --> 00:10:48.341
Sure.
148
00:10:48.382 --> 00:10:49.643
And then he never met her.
149
00:10:50.543 --> 00:10:54.187
How similar two people can be that never met.
150
00:10:54.207 --> 00:10:55.788
I mean, she looked like him.
151
00:10:55.828 --> 00:10:56.749
She felt like him.
152
00:10:56.829 --> 00:10:59.311
She's a strong athlete like him.
153
00:11:00.072 --> 00:11:05.757
She would, in the same way that he was a pretty calm guy, until he didn't need to be.
154
00:11:06.278 --> 00:11:10.299
And then he would flip a switch and he was the most intense guy in the room.
155
00:11:10.659 --> 00:11:14.000
And she's a very calm human, very intelligent.
156
00:11:14.060 --> 00:11:18.100
And then I see her play volleyball and they set her and she goes up and boom!
157
00:11:18.161 --> 00:11:18.981
And she's excited.
158
00:11:19.021 --> 00:11:22.281
I'm like, oh my gosh, this is exactly my brother.
159
00:11:22.621 --> 00:11:27.062
Now his wife was also a very driven, intense athlete and all those things too.
160
00:11:27.142 --> 00:11:29.623
But it's incredible.
161
00:11:30.703 --> 00:11:34.626
Quick story, the 20th anniversary of September 11th, I'm back.
162
00:11:34.847 --> 00:11:42.513
I'm out there with my youngest daughter who let's see, she would have been 11 years old at the time and getting ready to play volleyball herself.
163
00:11:43.434 --> 00:11:49.879
And in Pierce, my niece had a game at Columbia, the night of September 11th.
164
00:11:50.179 --> 00:11:59.007
So on the 20th anniversary, 20 years to the day, I'm able to sit in a gym and watch her play volleyball in New York city with his widow.
165
00:11:59.787 --> 00:12:02.768
And my youngest daughter was an unbelievable moment.
166
00:12:03.089 --> 00:12:03.689
My goodness.
167
00:12:17.875 --> 00:12:21.237
So many people's lives have fragmenting moments.
168
00:12:21.557 --> 00:12:23.758
I mean, some are horrific as this.
169
00:12:25.648 --> 00:12:32.409
But the verses that you connected with how you move into the storm are pretty straightforward.
170
00:12:33.390 --> 00:12:35.090
Romans, the fifth chapter.
171
00:12:35.110 --> 00:12:41.451
I loved what you said that you didn't you didn't you weren't good at memorizing scripture growing up.
172
00:12:41.471 --> 00:12:43.332
You really didn't come to faith till you were 15.
173
00:12:43.372 --> 00:12:45.032
So you didn't get all the Sunday school stuff.
174
00:12:45.392 --> 00:12:47.333
So your favorite verse was Jesus wept.
175
00:12:47.773 --> 00:12:49.013
And we all chuckled at that.
176
00:12:49.073 --> 00:12:53.534
But in fact, that's a powerful verse for a whole range of reasons that you specified.
177
00:12:53.974 --> 00:12:57.116
Romans 5, 3, and 4, you can probably quote it for me.
178
00:12:57.716 --> 00:12:59.478
Can you quote it for me right out of the chute?
179
00:12:59.758 --> 00:12:59.998
Yeah.
180
00:13:00.718 --> 00:13:01.019
Yeah.
181
00:13:01.619 --> 00:13:09.584
It's rejoice in our suffering because we know that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance character, and perseverance hope.
182
00:13:11.059 --> 00:13:14.202
So you got a bad you got what feels like a bad thing.
183
00:13:14.382 --> 00:13:19.586
I mean, I mean, nobody wakes up in the morning and say, you know, I just like to have 43 pounds of suffering today.
184
00:13:19.726 --> 00:13:20.347
Nobody does that.
185
00:13:20.988 --> 00:13:23.350
So so suffering will come to all us.
186
00:13:23.990 --> 00:13:25.892
People don't identify with our victories.
187
00:13:26.492 --> 00:13:32.437
They don't identify with the with the 10 games you won as a football coach or whatever it is.
188
00:13:33.438 --> 00:13:37.401
But they absolutely identify with the losses and the sufferings.
189
00:13:38.282 --> 00:13:43.966
So here is Paul speaking to this essential piece of the human condition.
190
00:13:44.566 --> 00:13:46.568
We all know what suffering feels like.
191
00:13:47.869 --> 00:13:49.890
And he does this sequence, which you just quoted.
192
00:13:51.031 --> 00:13:51.471
Suffering.
193
00:13:52.692 --> 00:14:01.394
is overcome, I'll use that language, by perseverance, which produces character, which gives you hope.
194
00:14:02.155 --> 00:14:03.575
Do I have that trilogy right?
195
00:14:04.555 --> 00:14:06.176
Perseverance, character, hope.
196
00:14:06.336 --> 00:14:08.436
Some of the other versions say endurance.
197
00:14:08.896 --> 00:14:10.457
Endurance, right.
198
00:14:10.477 --> 00:14:11.257
Builds character.
199
00:14:11.970 --> 00:14:13.011
And that's open for me.
200
00:14:13.171 --> 00:14:18.934
I used to always kind of get frustrated by that because we're just supposed to be happy all the time.
201
00:14:19.354 --> 00:14:21.556
We're just supposed to rejoice like, hey, God is good.
202
00:14:21.616 --> 00:14:23.537
And when things are tough, God is still good.
203
00:14:24.197 --> 00:14:25.258
I struggled with that.
204
00:14:25.458 --> 00:14:29.140
And it felt a little fake to me, but it wasn't until I really dug in.
205
00:14:29.200 --> 00:14:35.083
It's like he's not giving us, you know, just an easy shortcut to hope and joy.
206
00:14:35.123 --> 00:14:37.765
He is telling us things will be tough.
207
00:14:38.623 --> 00:14:40.184
And you need to follow this sequence.
208
00:14:40.204 --> 00:14:45.628
You need to follow the sequence of learning to persevere, build that endurance, build that strength.
209
00:14:45.688 --> 00:15:00.018
And when you do, you will have character that you didn't have before so that you can face future things with hope, have hope in the Lord versus just sitting there feeling defeated, which I did for at least the first seven months.
210
00:15:00.638 --> 00:15:02.660
Yeah, so what I realized through all of this was
211
00:15:04.134 --> 00:15:06.255
hope is not a fleeting emotion.
212
00:15:06.315 --> 00:15:07.536
It's not conditional.
213
00:15:08.136 --> 00:15:09.276
It's something you can build.
214
00:15:09.877 --> 00:15:10.757
You can rebuild.
215
00:15:11.037 --> 00:15:12.018
It's a mindset.
216
00:15:13.738 --> 00:15:14.939
It's not just a feeling.
217
00:15:14.979 --> 00:15:18.300
And so for me, I just completely redid my morning.
218
00:15:19.001 --> 00:15:21.121
I started praying each morning.
219
00:15:21.762 --> 00:15:25.203
And I would literally set a timer because I didn't know what to pray.
220
00:15:25.223 --> 00:15:29.045
I didn't know what to say because I was kind of ashamed of my grief.
221
00:15:29.888 --> 00:15:31.069
I truly believed in God.
222
00:15:31.109 --> 00:15:33.250
Why am I grieving that still?
223
00:15:33.810 --> 00:15:36.192
And I didn't know how to connect my grief with my faith.
224
00:15:36.312 --> 00:15:37.953
And so that took me some time.
225
00:15:37.993 --> 00:15:40.674
And really what I was doing was mindset work.
226
00:15:40.994 --> 00:15:42.775
I was trying to replace those negative thoughts.
227
00:15:42.855 --> 00:15:44.636
I even did some positive affirmations.
228
00:15:44.696 --> 00:15:45.617
I did journaling.
229
00:15:45.657 --> 00:15:52.400
I did all of those things to try to replace those negative thoughts in my head with more positive and hopeful thoughts.
230
00:15:53.922 --> 00:15:54.282
grateful.
231
00:15:54.302 --> 00:16:02.667
And then I would, then I'd read the Bible books about the Bible, books about leadership, books about grief, inspirational books, just to learn.
232
00:16:03.387 --> 00:16:05.528
I knew I didn't know enough and that helped a lot.
233
00:16:05.548 --> 00:16:08.990
It really exercised, shifted a lot of things for me.
234
00:16:10.231 --> 00:16:15.394
Uh, just, it, it just, when I feel those endorphins, I'm more purposeful and more intentional.
235
00:16:15.514 --> 00:16:15.594
I'm
236
00:16:16.477 --> 00:16:44.550
ready for the day and i'm a better version of myself and so those things really shifted things for me and helped me realize a lot of things you know i see what i say in in this message is storms are inevitable you know they john 16 33 i told you these things in this world you will have trouble yeah they're coming yeah but you don't have to be defeated by a storm i think like what you said earlier about today's generation storms overwhelm people
237
00:16:45.304 --> 00:16:50.980
immediately nowadays i think we for so long we're so worried about telling people you know to you know
238
00:16:51.855 --> 00:16:54.436
The way people were raised was too much.
239
00:16:54.516 --> 00:16:55.477
It was too intense.
240
00:16:55.597 --> 00:16:56.597
It wasn't enough loving.
241
00:16:56.637 --> 00:17:00.919
And so each generation has gotten more sensitive, I guess, in the way they raise their kids.
242
00:17:00.959 --> 00:17:03.700
And so when the storm hits, they're like, it's too much.
243
00:17:04.440 --> 00:17:05.261
I can't deal with it.
244
00:17:05.301 --> 00:17:06.241
I can't deal with all this.
245
00:17:06.261 --> 00:17:06.982
But they're coming.
246
00:17:07.042 --> 00:17:09.783
And so for too long, I let it define me.
247
00:17:10.083 --> 00:17:14.205
They said it can either define you, defeat you, or develop you.
248
00:17:14.745 --> 00:17:17.286
And I had to learn to have it develop me.
249
00:17:18.775 --> 00:17:19.376
Say that again.
250
00:17:19.976 --> 00:17:20.997
That trilogy, say that.
251
00:17:21.537 --> 00:17:26.640
Dorms can either define you, defeat you, or develop you.
252
00:17:26.740 --> 00:17:30.283
And so for a while, it was my identity.
253
00:17:30.303 --> 00:17:30.963
It defined me.
254
00:17:30.983 --> 00:17:32.284
That was the 9-11 guy.
255
00:17:32.364 --> 00:17:34.185
It's all I thought about, all I talked about.
256
00:17:34.965 --> 00:17:35.726
Then it defeated me.
257
00:17:36.405 --> 00:17:42.008
And that's what it was a moment in the parking lot of hanging my head and saying, I can't, I don't have energy anymore.
258
00:17:42.248 --> 00:17:43.708
I don't have drive anymore.
259
00:17:44.049 --> 00:17:47.050
So I was going to start some other programs to get into administration.
260
00:17:47.090 --> 00:17:48.050
I backed out all of them.
261
00:17:48.691 --> 00:17:49.291
I was defeated.
262
00:17:49.751 --> 00:17:50.972
I'm just a shell of myself.
263
00:17:51.012 --> 00:17:54.574
And so then I was like, I can't keep doing that.
264
00:17:54.614 --> 00:17:56.354
It's time that this needs to develop me.
265
00:17:56.614 --> 00:17:59.716
I didn't have that much wisdom then to know that's what Hose is doing.
266
00:18:00.448 --> 00:18:09.831
But luckily, supportive people around me, the Holy Spirit moment pushed me in a direction of, you need to start moving, have this develop you.
267
00:18:10.091 --> 00:18:13.451
You know, my sister-in-law is such a good example of that.
268
00:18:13.992 --> 00:18:23.894
Just two years afterwards, in 2003, she starts a foundation for autistic children and their families named after my brother from the Woodall Foundation for Exceptional Children.
269
00:18:24.314 --> 00:18:26.415
She took the worst day of her life
270
00:18:27.120 --> 00:18:32.108
the loss of her future, as she would say, and said, I'm going to do good with this.
271
00:18:32.188 --> 00:18:37.376
And I'm going to not have this storm, not have it defined me, but it's going to develop me.
272
00:18:37.897 --> 00:18:40.621
I'm going to find hope and make an impact on this world.
273
00:18:41.302 --> 00:18:41.803
That's great.
274
00:18:49.599 --> 00:18:50.440
It's more than great.
275
00:18:50.500 --> 00:18:52.021
You know, I heard it.
276
00:18:52.102 --> 00:18:53.963
I was sitting there taking notes.
277
00:18:54.204 --> 00:18:56.666
I don't always take notes, but I was taking notes.
278
00:18:57.347 --> 00:19:03.673
And just the simplicity, if I can put it that way, you know, you're not using four syllable words.
279
00:19:03.693 --> 00:19:04.414
You're an educator.
280
00:19:04.614 --> 00:19:06.096
You could use four syllable words.
281
00:19:06.616 --> 00:19:08.457
But you were using coaching words.
282
00:19:08.797 --> 00:19:15.281
Those practices, you're saying, I came to a place where I said, okay, what are the habits?
283
00:19:15.841 --> 00:19:22.184
What are the practices that get me through this as I face the storm?
284
00:19:23.165 --> 00:19:26.947
And then at the end of your message, you gave us three or four things.
285
00:19:28.027 --> 00:19:29.288
Besides those, I think.
286
00:19:29.788 --> 00:19:30.309
Did you not?
287
00:19:31.029 --> 00:19:31.269
Right.
288
00:19:31.309 --> 00:19:34.751
So I talked about how God can redeem what he did not orchestrate.
289
00:19:35.131 --> 00:19:35.411
Right.
290
00:19:35.651 --> 00:19:39.052
Just that I don't believe God orchestrated 9-11.
291
00:19:40.633 --> 00:19:50.777
There's, you know, countless pieces of the Bible of horrible things happening, horrible decisions being made that God never would have wanted that he said, but I can redeem it and I can use it.
292
00:19:51.627 --> 00:19:58.234
And I use the example of that Kintsugi bowl where the golden inlay in the Japanese art.
293
00:19:58.394 --> 00:19:59.395
I just love that.
294
00:19:59.455 --> 00:20:01.857
And to me, that is who we are as believers.
295
00:20:01.897 --> 00:20:05.501
We're standing there with our scars, but our scars have been redeemed.
296
00:20:05.521 --> 00:20:10.666
And we're more beautiful than we've ever been because of what we've been through, because we've been.
297
00:20:11.340 --> 00:20:11.700
redeemed.
298
00:20:11.740 --> 00:20:28.570
And I don't know if I said it in the one you were in, but I talk a lot about some of the most authentic people, most genuine, the most faithful, purposeful people almost always have something in their background or their history that was tragic or difficult.
299
00:20:30.211 --> 00:20:30.852
And why is that?
300
00:20:30.872 --> 00:20:33.656
Because they've had to learn these things.
301
00:20:33.797 --> 00:20:37.241
You know, the generation that says you're overwhelmed, they haven't had anything.
302
00:20:37.382 --> 00:20:44.312
But people that have experienced those things are so authentic and, you know, they call that post-traumatic growth.
303
00:20:44.915 --> 00:20:48.079
that you can emerge stronger after trauma or tragedy.
304
00:20:48.099 --> 00:20:49.640
And that's what I was experiencing.
305
00:20:49.961 --> 00:20:55.426
But really all that is, that's Romans five, three, four going perseverance, the character and hope.
306
00:20:55.446 --> 00:21:00.552
And we just, in our modern times, like putting modern terms on things, dramatic growth.
307
00:21:00.592 --> 00:21:03.235
And another one of my favorite sayings in there,
308
00:21:04.108 --> 00:21:10.672
I don't think I shared when you were there was there's a Chinese proverb that says, if you want to know the path ahead, ask those coming back.
309
00:21:11.752 --> 00:21:13.773
And so like, think about it in Colorado.
310
00:21:13.794 --> 00:21:14.514
We love our hikes.
311
00:21:14.554 --> 00:21:20.357
We love, every time I'm hiking up a hill, I'm always, are we close to the lake?
312
00:21:20.958 --> 00:21:22.658
You know, there's a plan at some point.
313
00:21:22.999 --> 00:21:25.540
You're constantly asking the people coming down the hill, right?
314
00:21:26.140 --> 00:21:28.922
But when I was dealing with this, I didn't ask anybody.
315
00:21:29.542 --> 00:21:31.023
I just isolated myself.
316
00:21:31.063 --> 00:21:32.404
I did it completely alone.
317
00:21:33.215 --> 00:21:36.137
And then eventually realized I can't do it alone anymore.
318
00:21:36.157 --> 00:21:44.324
I got to rely on the support of my wife, the support of my friends, the support of my church, and ask people, how do I get through this?
319
00:21:44.424 --> 00:21:54.071
And now the beautiful thing, having gone through this for so long, I consider myself one of those people now coming back down the trail because I have experienced these things.
320
00:21:54.111 --> 00:21:59.335
And now I have been able to help so many people through their grief, through their adversity, simply because of what I went through.
321
00:22:00.152 --> 00:22:13.875
And I would say this to young people, I want to be around folks who have been through some stuff because it helps me in this situation be steady when everybody's going bonkers, if I can put it that way.
322
00:22:14.095 --> 00:22:20.397
You're married to an excellent counselor, that woman of yours that got a PhD at Colorado State.
323
00:22:20.797 --> 00:22:24.218
I know she's excellent because I've sat with her on occasion.
324
00:22:26.118 --> 00:22:33.365
Well, when you were going through this, did you ask her for help or or or if she offered the help?
325
00:22:33.405 --> 00:22:35.327
Did you listen or what was going on there?
326
00:22:35.367 --> 00:22:36.448
If I can be so bold.
327
00:22:37.810 --> 00:22:40.532
So I never really asked her for help.
328
00:22:40.552 --> 00:22:41.653
She was always hesitant.
329
00:22:41.753 --> 00:22:44.236
But I can remember a number of times.
330
00:22:45.366 --> 00:22:50.375
Just saying, okay, let's say someone came to you with what I just said.
331
00:22:50.996 --> 00:22:51.997
What would you tell them?
332
00:22:52.679 --> 00:22:53.941
She preferred that model.
333
00:22:54.502 --> 00:22:57.006
Oh, I would tell them you should do this, this, this.
334
00:22:57.146 --> 00:22:57.827
That's what I needed.
335
00:23:00.282 --> 00:23:04.384
I think she did not sit me down and talk me through the stages of grief.
336
00:23:04.424 --> 00:23:05.765
She gave me the space to do it.
337
00:23:05.785 --> 00:23:06.826
She would encourage me.
338
00:23:06.866 --> 00:23:12.450
She'd encourage me to get out with people and go do things, to exercise, all those kind of things.
339
00:23:12.470 --> 00:23:24.278
So I think she probably was taking her wisdom, her knowledge, and putting it in a way that she knew I would respond to it instead of just trying to do therapy with it.
340
00:23:24.318 --> 00:23:26.580
But I can remember many times of him.
341
00:23:27.785 --> 00:23:29.466
Okay, I'm broken.
342
00:23:29.506 --> 00:23:32.068
So if someone showed up, what would you tell them?
343
00:23:32.488 --> 00:23:33.449
That's all I needed to hear.
344
00:23:33.549 --> 00:23:33.949
Let's go.
345
00:23:35.150 --> 00:23:35.730
That's good.
346
00:23:41.374 --> 00:23:44.876
Well, we're going to wrap this up, Craig.
347
00:23:45.136 --> 00:23:50.700
First of all, you have a book that you have just published called Overcome.
348
00:23:51.681 --> 00:23:52.141
Is that it?
349
00:23:53.242 --> 00:23:56.144
Overcome, Rebuilding Hope After Losing My Brother on 9-11.
350
00:23:58.448 --> 00:23:59.569
Where can I get that book?
351
00:24:00.790 --> 00:24:01.270
Can I go?
352
00:24:01.290 --> 00:24:02.251
The best is on Amazon.
353
00:24:02.571 --> 00:24:04.072
So we can go to Amazon.
354
00:24:04.212 --> 00:24:06.234
Anybody who wants to can get it?
355
00:24:06.414 --> 00:24:06.655
Correct.
356
00:24:07.155 --> 00:24:10.838
I'm assuming that part of what you just said, or all, is in that book.
357
00:24:11.058 --> 00:24:17.964
Any last thoughts that you'd like to give us about takeaways or just thoughts for the person out there?
358
00:24:18.104 --> 00:24:21.547
You know, dear Lord, don't let us have another 9-11.
359
00:24:22.028 --> 00:24:23.709
But each of us has storms.
360
00:24:24.069 --> 00:24:25.931
Any other thoughts that you have for us?
361
00:24:26.489 --> 00:24:30.491
I guess I'll say a couple because one, I'm going to credit to you.
362
00:24:31.791 --> 00:24:36.253
You know, I, and I think you just said it once with, and you, you were quoting C.S.
363
00:24:36.293 --> 00:24:41.134
Lewis, I sat with my anger long enough until she told me her real name was grief.
364
00:24:41.234 --> 00:24:42.675
But it just like favorite quotes.
365
00:24:42.695 --> 00:24:45.476
Cause I was angry for so long and I didn't know why.
366
00:24:45.496 --> 00:24:48.117
And there's another famous quote I love.
367
00:24:48.836 --> 00:24:55.240
of Carl Jung, famous psychiatrist, that said, I'm not what happened to me, I'm what I choose to become.
368
00:24:56.261 --> 00:25:03.165
And that is something lost on our current generation because they're being told if something happened to you, that's how you're gonna be the most of your life.
369
00:25:03.985 --> 00:25:14.033
But I was choosing poorly, and it wasn't until I turned back into this storm and faced the storm and chose Jesus that things really started to change for me.
370
00:25:14.093 --> 00:25:22.940
And what I concluded the message the other day with, which I think symbolizes a lot of the growth I've been on, is the power in the word yet.
371
00:25:24.041 --> 00:25:29.886
Just the idea that I said so many times all these doubting statements and things.
372
00:25:30.437 --> 00:25:34.961
debilitating statements of I can't do this, I'm not strong enough, it'll never happen, it won't.
373
00:25:35.922 --> 00:25:45.951
And once I started to realize I am deciding that I can't do this, I'm putting an exclamation point on my negativity and my downward spiral.
374
00:25:46.431 --> 00:25:50.976
If I just add yet to the end of that sentence, I am not strong enough yet.
375
00:25:51.916 --> 00:25:53.218
I just don't see a way forward yet.
376
00:25:54.768 --> 00:25:56.430
that changes everything.
377
00:25:56.450 --> 00:26:00.332
And that, I think, is really the core, perseverance, the character, the hope.
378
00:26:00.412 --> 00:26:03.154
If you don't say yet, you get stuck at perseverance.
379
00:26:03.915 --> 00:26:05.496
You get stuck at this is too hard.
380
00:26:05.976 --> 00:26:08.778
If it's too hard, you don't build the character, you don't find the hope.
381
00:26:09.279 --> 00:26:12.621
So I had to dig in, believe in yet,
382
00:26:13.829 --> 00:26:17.370
be able to persevere, build that character, find hope.
383
00:26:17.450 --> 00:26:22.991
And it's been a long journey of popping down and falling on my face, standing back up and falling on my face.
384
00:26:23.111 --> 00:26:28.152
And I would love to tell you I have tremendous routines every single day and I'm locked in.
385
00:26:28.332 --> 00:26:32.813
And that is not true because it is still a daily decision, a daily habit.
386
00:26:32.853 --> 00:26:39.095
I'm a much better version of myself than I used to be, but it's still a daily habit, the power of yet.
387
00:26:39.746 --> 00:26:45.670
choosing who you're going to become is something that I just think I would, I will string them out.
388
00:26:46.170 --> 00:26:53.274
One year, you know, we hear a lot of slogan airing, if you will, just do it, whatever.
389
00:26:53.794 --> 00:26:57.737
And one of them, and not necessarily slogan is just say yes.
390
00:26:58.677 --> 00:27:00.618
But the idea of just say yet.
391
00:27:02.019 --> 00:27:02.800
That is so
392
00:27:04.445 --> 00:27:04.966
profound.
393
00:27:05.466 --> 00:27:12.214
It's like a key that unlocks doors that makes possibilities available to us.
394
00:27:13.990 --> 00:27:15.371
Well, thank you for doing this with me.
395
00:27:15.611 --> 00:27:17.772
I loved hearing you then.
396
00:27:17.792 --> 00:27:18.712
I loved hearing you now.
397
00:27:18.972 --> 00:27:22.014
And I don't think we're done with this conversation yet.
398
00:27:22.494 --> 00:27:33.039
As we think about 9-11, to be able to stay, quote, in the game and keep focusing that way is where I want to be.
399
00:27:33.539 --> 00:27:37.201
I can't thank you enough for coming on with me and doing this.
400
00:27:37.221 --> 00:27:42.664
And if you don't mind, I may circle back around and talk to you some more down the road.
401
00:27:43.664 --> 00:27:46.047
I may want to talk about football.
402
00:27:46.087 --> 00:27:46.628
You never know.
403
00:27:46.948 --> 00:27:48.410
But let's see where we go.
404
00:27:48.430 --> 00:27:48.930
For that, too.
405
00:27:49.711 --> 00:27:50.352
Thank you, Craig.
406
00:27:50.853 --> 00:27:51.493
God bless.
407
00:27:51.734 --> 00:27:52.094
Thank you.
408
00:28:12.070 --> 00:28:12.633
you
